(Spindletop Church, from
Apr 29, 2007 10:30 AM to

- People usually think of fear as a negative emotion, and definitely to be avoided at all costs. Mental health professionals diagnose people with problems with fear, as having anxiety or panic disorders. Some spiritual leaders tell us not to let fear control us. SERMON: End of Life—A Spiritual Opportunity by Reverend Tom Capo
(Spindletop Church, from
Dec 10, 2006 10:30 AM to
Dec 10, 2006 11:30 AM)
- Lately I have been handing out Life Crisis forms to many congregates and regular visitors. This form asks a person to consider issues like what would you like at your memorial service—music, readings, remembrances. It is not easy for many of us to think about the end of our lives or how we like our lives to be remembered. I have spend time with a number of people who were nearing the end of their lives; some of these people had much to share, and some, I felt, wanted permission to face the issues that naturally come up when one’s life is nearing an end.

(Spindletop Church, from

- The Buddha taught many things. He brought us the four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. He exposed us to a way of living that included moderation, mindfulness and caring for people and planet. If we were to meet Buddha on the road today, how would we act? How would we respond? Would we listen to him/her or would be just kill him/her and we done with it?

SERMON: Conflict, Anger, Rage: A Faith Centered Approach to Differences by Rev.Capo
(Spindletop Church, from
Oct 08, 2006 10:30 AM to
Oct 08, 2006 11:30 AM)
- In every area of life-in our families, our friendships, our work places and our church- there will be conflict. And many times, someone gets angry when conflict happens. Sometimes, people even get out control with their anger, become enraged, destructive, abusive. I used to consult with the Probation Department in Harris County-facilitating classes for men (and sometimes women) arrested for domestic violence and abuse. In my work with them, we discussed how to manage conflict, anger, and rage. Many times in our discussion, I brought up the issue of faith, and how faith, along with counseling, might help them recover from their addiction to anger and rage.

SERMON: Trust by Joyce L. Supina
(Spindletop Church, from
Sep 24, 2006 10:30 AM to
Sep 24, 2006 11:30 AM)
- In organizations created to honor the Spirit in the Other it is still difficult when the Other engages the world differently than you. Trust is a key ingredient, and in spiritual settings it is even more difficult to admit that we don’t trust each other’s judgment. So the questions are “What needs to be said aloud” and “How do we create systems built on trust which produce effective outcomes?

SERMON: Grief by Rev. Tom Capo
(Spindletop Church, from
Sep 17, 2006 10:30 AM to
Sep 17, 2006 11:30 AM)
- Everyone of us has experienced some kind of loss. Some have experience loss from the death of a beloved family member or a beloved pet. Some have experienced loss from a divorce, some from a move--away from family and friends. Some have experienced loss when they got fired or laid off. Some have experienced loss when they were disabled or developed a significant or chronic illness. We cannot compare the depth of pain any one of us experiences when we have a loss of any kind. But there are some feelings that many people go through during a loss. And there are some ways that can help us cope with any kind of loss, if we are willing to face the pain, move through the feelings, abandon the why’s, and look for peace.

(Spindletop Church, from
Aug 27, 2006 10:30 AM to
Aug 27, 2006 11:30 AM)
- What does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist? As we come back together to start our church year, I felt that I would share some of my beliefs on the matter, as well as some other UUs thoughts on being a Unitarian Universalist. Please come prepared to celebrate the beginning of our church year. Each year we join together to share with one another about our many journeys over the summer. We have a special Water Communion-to celebrate our being apart and our coming back together---renewing our connection with one another. Each person is encouraged to bring water from their travels over the summer (if you don't bring water, we will have water that you can use to symbolize your many travels) to pour into our communal water as they share their meaningful experiences.

- At this summer's Southwest Unitarian Universalist Summer Institute, I had the pleasure to hear Dr. Paul Rasor, J.D., M.Div., Ph.D. talk about religious freedom as being the cornerstone of modern democracy. He was an engaging speaker, with strong feelings about religious liberalism both supporting and depending our religious freedom. He also explored how a commitment to deepening our democracy can also deepen our faith.

(Spindletop Church, from
Aug 13, 2006 10:30 AM to

- Morals and Ethics are foundations by which we live: how we treat ourselves, how we treat one another, how we treat all the myriad aspects of creation. As Unitarian Universalists, we are called to develop our own morals and ethics, but are there some that we UUs have in common? And are there some we hold in common with the greater community of humanity?
